The Most Important Lessons from My Years as a Wedding Planner

Between the life-changing proposal and the tear-jerking proposal, there’s the unique stress known as wedding planning. Even if your big day is a year or more out. It is important to start planning as soon as possible.

Nevertheless, as extraordinary as weddings are, there will be things that will happen along the way, so here goes

1. It Is Impossible to Please Everyone – and You Might Just Offend Someone

Having a wedding party is akin to throwing a huge party – except that the event is more like a fancy gala where everyone has opinions about everything. You might discover your fiancée’s questionable taste in décor colors. Or your over-enthusiastic aunt that wants to be informed about everything. You may feel guilty if you need to cut people from the invite list, or when asking people to spend money on formal clothing.

You’ll probably want to strike a reasonable balance between family requests and what you and your spouse want, but remember, this is your big day, no one else’s.

2. Not Making Decisions is Equivalent to Being a Bridezilla

Decisions are not everyone’s strong suit, and believe me, I know how many decisions a wedding requires. However, the sooner you figure out what you want (at least the important stuff), then the smaller details can be decided upon much easier.

3. Know When to Splurge

Your wedding is a wonderful occasion (and hopefully, a once-in-a-lifetime) occasion. Worrying over each and every detail is a quick way to add unnecessary levels of stress to the planning process. Your Wedding Day is bound to be amazing, but it will equate to a mere blip in the timeline of your life, so don’t sweat the small stuff.

So make your wedding planning process easier and choose which parts of the wedding you are willing to spend more on. As a wedding planner, I would advise spending on the venue and on the food. Go all out!

4. Vet Your Wedding Vendors as Thoroughly as Possible

Even if your friends highly recommend a vendor, do your due diligence to make sure that the vendor’s services can accommodate your wedding needs. This could not be more true than when you are dealing with music.

5. Organize your ideas: Get Checklists

Popsugar has wedding day photo list, BuzzFeed has a collection of diagrams for planning every aspect of your wedding, and RealSimple offers another checklist. Mark everything down, and follow accordingly!

6. Don’t Feel Obliged to Honor Traditions That Don’t Resonate

Just because you’re committing to a lifelong partner doesn’t mean you have to acknowledge age-old traditions that don’t mean anything to you. The highly personalized weddings are the ones people remember, anyways. Want to dance down the aisle? Now is your chance. Want to trash that dress? Go for it!
